I was invited to “Breakfast with a Rock Star,” but Bono was nowhere in sight! However, I did have the wonderful honor of meeting with about 25 members of CREW Washington D.C. Tuesday in an intimate gathering to talk about my career journey, CREW Network and the important work we are doing in the industry to advance women.

The 2017 CREW Washington DC Board of Directors
Held at the fabulous new amenity space at the Army Navy Club, our host, Washington REIT, gave attendees a first taste of some exceptional space. It was great to hold our discussion in a space that demonstrates the demands of the current market. And it was terrific to see both women in senior roles and newcomers around the room. Bravo!
In our discussion, it was clear that each of us has been on our individual journey, but we all have relatable experiences. I was amazed at the thoughtful experiences members shared with me and the ideas we discussed for CREW Network.
In discussing my personal career journey, I shared that I was grateful to have begun my career with a solid foundation grounded in my rural Pennsylvania upbringing of hard work, honor and integrity. I credit my parents with modeling the work ethic and values that helped shape me. Gleaning from the CEOs I have worked for, I shared the following wisdom:
- Be willing to think differently, explore opportunities and innovate.
- Be self-aware: understand who you are and what you might need to change to be more successful.
- Empower your team, thank your team and appreciate all they contribute to the organization’s success.
- Build a network that works for you.
- Don’t be afraid to say that you are wrong.
During the discussion, we talked about the big picture initiatives for the organization which include growing membership, reinstituting the CREW Leadership Certificate Program, global growth and development, and continuing to support chapters and members with tools and resources. The major new undertaking is the recently launched CREW Network website and online CREWbiz member community. Leveraging technology and building engagement through our community will continue to be a powerful way for members to explore business opportunities and connect with others.
We closed the discussion noting that the annual CREW Network Convention and Marketplace in Houston, Texas is a terrific opportunity for members to experience the power of the network. (Registration is open!) See you in Houston, CREW DC!
