In search of an eye-catching, functional headquarters location, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Central Indiana wanted to provide a positive work environment for its growing staff and a new gathering space for its “Bigs” and “Littles.”

After selecting a two-story building that previously housed a hardware store on the first floor and leased offices on the second floor, BBBS searched for construction and design professionals needed to make the dream a reality.

Jill Rose of Rowland Design Inc. and Lauren Kriner of Capitol Construction are veteran commercial real estate industry players and dedicated members (and past presidents) of IndyCREW. Well-known for its expertise in working on non-profit projects, Capitol Construction was selected to partner with Rowland Design, which would provide the architecture and interior design services for the new headquarters.

Guided by Capitol Construction’s non-profit expertise, the companies worked together to create a plan that allowed BBBS to stay within its budget without sacrificing design objectives, a significant concern for all non-profits. These objectives included a strong street presence, a welcoming and statement-making entrance, an ample community/gathering space, a demonstration kitchen, and open, well-lit office spaces.

Though BBBS selected and hired their firms, Rose and Kriner’s relationship through IndyCREW was crucial in the successful completion of the project. IndyCREW member Kassandra Green nominated the project for recognition, and noted the impact CREW members have on their communities.

"The success of this project demonstrates what CREW members can accomplish together,” Green said. “This building serves our community and is a beautiful addition to our city."
